Barry’s Tea on The Simpsons

20 March 2009

As part of the high profile St Patrick's Day Irish Simpsons special, Barry's Tea joined the ranks of Colm Meany and Glen Hansard and was immortalised in the animated series.

Incorporating all that is Irish, the special edition of the Simpsons was screened in Ireland, the first time it's had its premiere outside of America. The Simpsons' executive producers, Al Jean and James L Brooks, and Nancy Cartwright, who voices Bart and other characters, travelled to Ireland for the exclusive screening of the episode.

Barry's Tea commented, "We couldn't believe it when we caught sight of Barry's Tea in the St Patrick's Day special; we were obviously delighted to be included as an integral part of Irish society in the yellow skinned show. Barry's Tea has been around since 1901 and it's obviously a brand steeped in Irish heritage, our inclusion in the Simpson's Irish special proves this."

Executive Producer Al Jean explains the story, "Homer and Grandpa get drunk, they buy a bar and then they find, as it turns out, in Ireland, pubs aren't so popular anymore because you can't smoke in them. So they're really up a creek."

As the Simpsons come to terms with the new hi-tech Ireland - home to Hewlett Fitzpackard and Mickrosoft - the bar struggles to attract customers, leading Homer to lament that "the Irish have become hard-working and sober". Probably too busy drinking Barry's Tea!
